Calzone

If you thought, that that the Italians only love pizza, take a look at this the ‘Calzone’ a popular Italian snack or meal. I like to call it ‘pizza on the go’ .. haha. Everything you would like on a pizza, used as a stuffing, feel free to add your own touch. Check this recipe out.

Ingredients (for the dough)
Dry yeast – 7.5gm
Warm water – 200ml
Olive oil – 1tbsp
Sugar – 1tbsp
Salt – 1tsp
Flour – 400gm

Ingredients (for the stuffing)
Pomodoro sauce – 100ml
Mozzarella cheese – 2tbsp
Cheddar – 2tbsp
Sliced pepperoni – ½ cup
Sliced mushrooms – ½ cup
Basil – 5no.
Egg – 1no
Method (to make the dough):
In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in the water. Add the oil, sugar and salt & mix in 1 cup of the flour until smooth. Gradually stir in the rest of the flour &continue kneading till the dough is smooth and workable. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is elastic. Lay dough in a bowl containing 1 teaspoon olive oil, then flip the dough, cover and let rise until almost doubled.
(For the filling)
While dough is rising, combine the Mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms and basil leaves in a large bowl. Mix well, cover bowl and refrigerate to chill.
Preheat oven to 190*c.
When dough is ready, punch it down and separate it into 2 equal parts. Roll each part out into thin circles on a lightly floured surface. Apply half the pomodoro sauce like you would on a pizza base. Fill each circle with ½ of the cheese & meat filling and fold over; securing the edges by folding in and pressing with a fork. Brush the top of each calzone with egg wash and place on a lightly greased baking trey. Bake at 190*c for 30 minutes.
