Nothing beats traditional prawn curry with Goan rice followed by an afternoon siesta on a Sunday. Here’s a recipe from O’Coqueiro at Porvorim to be enjoyed in true Goan style.

Prawns – 100gm

Coconut – 1 cup

Black pepper – 1 tsp

Coriander seeds – 1 tsp

Tamarind juice – 1/2 cup

Ginger – 1 tbsp

Garlic – 2 tbsp

Cumin – 1/2 tsp

Termeric – 1/2 tsp

Kashmiri chilli – 4 no.

Green chilli – 2 slit

Salt – to taste

Lime – a squeeze

1. Begin the recipe by gathering all the ingredients. This is called ‘Mise en plas’

2. To make the Masala, grind together the grated coconut, black pepper, coriander seeds, ginger, garlic, cumin, turmeric & Kashmiri chillies. If poddible, grind the masala in a stone grinder till smooth and fluffy.

3. Marinate the prawns with a squeeze of lime & salt. Keep aside for about 10 min.

4. Add the masala to a sauce pan with a table spoon of oil. Add in a cup of water & mix well. Bring to a boil & reduce flame to let the curry slowly simmer for about 10 min. At this time add in the tamarind juice, prawns and split green chillies. Cook for further 3 min.

5. Serve with a portion of steamed rice!!
